Prescription Furniture™ is not a slogan. It is 40 years of helping people recover from chronic discomfort.

Ergo Snob is 40 years of using product to help people recover from chronic discomfort, expressed through beautifully designed objects. Chicago born, and picky since 1992.

01 · Where it began

Born in the field.

Ergo Snob comes out of 40 years spent matching people to furniture in the field, and using that furniture to help them recover from chronic discomfort, from 160,000 square foot campuses to individual workstations.

That work taught us exactly where the market settles for "good enough": mechanisms that need a manual, seats built for one body type, arms that fight the desk they clamp to. So we built our own line. Every product is informed by decades of understanding how people actually sit, and by a refusal to accept furniture that looks good and wears the body down.

02 · The name

We are snobs. We would like you to be one too.

The name comes from a phrase everyone already uses. A wine snob. A coffee snob. A furniture snob. It has never described a person who looks down on people. It describes a person who knows the difference and will not pretend otherwise.

Ergo is from ergonomics, the science of building an object around the human body so the body is protected rather than worn down. Put the two together and you have us: discerning about what a workstation does to a body, not only about what it does to a room. The chair, the arm that holds the screen, the power at the surface. Each one either supports the body or works against it, and we have opinions about all three.

We came out of a design firm, so we take the furniture snob seriously. Taste is not the problem. Stopping there is. A chair can be beautiful and still work against the body, and a chair can be clinically correct and still be something nobody wants in the room. We hold both standards at once, Prescription Furniture™ and Elevated By Design™, and a product has to clear both to carry our name.

So yes, we are snobs. We have spent 40 years using product to help people recover from chronic discomfort, which is a long time to watch the wrong chair undo good work. We are snobs about seat depth, cylinder grade, and how a fabric wears. We are not snobs about people.

We would like you to be one as well. You spend more hours at your workstation than anywhere but your bed. Being discerning about it is not precious. It is correct.

Ergo

From ergonomics. The science of building an object around the human body, so the body is protected rather than worn down.

Snob

From the way the word is actually used. A wine snob. A design snob. Someone who knows the difference and refuses to accept less.

Ergo Snob

Discerning about what your workstation does to your body, and about how it looks doing it. Both, or it does not ship.

02 · In the media

Straightening
up.

Our founder, Jeff Meltzer of Applied Ergonomics, joined The Balance with Dr. Ozuah to talk spine health, posture, and the furniture that supports both.

03 · How we speak, and why

40 years of helping people recover
earns the right to have opinions.

Authoritative

We stand behind it

Forty years of helping people recover from chronic discomfort stand behind every product. We have opinions, and we state them plainly.
Precise

Specific, not approximate

Specific about what the body needs and why. Seat depth ranges in inches, gas cylinders by class, fabric tested by abrasion cycle count.
Restrained

No empty superlatives

We would rather name a limit than dress it up. If a chair has nothing to adjust, we say it has nothing to adjust.
04 · Sustainability

Built to last is the first kind of sustainable. This is the second.

Our Align monitor arms are mostly aluminum and steel, metals that get recycled and reborn rather than landfilled. Across the series, 45–48% of every unit is already recycled material, counted honestly across pre-consumer and post-consumer content.
